The memorial garden

Lindsay’s Life & Leisure Garden holds the names of the people RAID families lost. Each spring it is replanted, and we gather to remember.

The plaque reads

Sit and feel the breeze upon your face, treasure each day, each breath, each friend, because… "Life is Sweet."

Lindsay Kyle was 26 and months from graduating when an impaired driver going 106 mph hit her car as she waited at a red light at Exchange Boulevard and Ford Street. Her family established the garden on the northeast side of Hartwell Hall in 2005, where Lindsay had most of her classes. Her mother, Sarah Palermo, has spoken for her ever since, and the garden has become a home for the names of others.

The markers

Names in copper

Copper plant markers in the garden carry the names, years and hometowns of people RAID families lost, and of survivors.

Each spring

A day in the garden

Every spring, students in SUNY Brockport’s Rec Club clean and replant the garden after the winter, a tradition that has continued since Lindsay’s family established it. RAID families and STOP-DWI Monroe County volunteers gather there too, tending the markers and remembering the people they name. For this year’s date, follow RAID on Facebook or get in touch.

Help us tend it.
